The HE sector has generally considered learning spaces with a utilisation of 35%+ to be ‘good’ (something to be aspired to even), whilst 25% or below is ‘poor’, and has done so for about 2 decades. This hasn’t been entirely helpful though; utilisation percentages are often misunderstood, don’t lend themselves to demonstrating where improvements have been made, or obscure where opportunities might exist. As a result, HESMG set out to create a sector-wide grading system, with the aim of making utilisation a ‘useful’ metric.
