The term or buzzword Student experience has been on the rise for a number of years now and it looks like it will be sticking around as more and more students look to make informed choices about where to study, the value of courses, experiences and preparation for life beyond their studies.
Working towards exams can create feelings of worry and anxiety, especially at
university when students are aiming for a degree. Kingston University wanted to ease the pressure on students by providing days off in between exams, personalised exam timetables and offer an all-around improved student experience.
The Universities current system was unreliable, clunky, and time-consuming with a one-time data download that didn’t allow for any changes. Scheduling of the exam timetable was through extreme manual data entry on spreadsheets and could take up to two weeks to schedule.
“Exams are now completed in less weeks during each period. Staff stress and man hours have reduced significantly from two weeks down to two days.”.
Kingston University decided to evaluate the marketplace for both a timetabling and an exams software solution. Scientia was seen as the best provider for both these areas. The project implementation was in August 2017, with a GoLive date set for November 2017 ahead of the universities exam period in January 2018. Transitions between the old system to Exam Scheduler went smoothly and took a matter of months.
The University purchased Scientia Connect to integrate between Tribal:SITS and Exam Scheduler. Implementation work had to be completed by November 2017 to ensure that no deadlines were missed to produce the exams timetable for the January exam period.
Mark Bonetzky, Head of Timetabling at Kingston University said “Straight away we noticed immediate improvements, for instance, we were able to provide students with a guaranteed day off in between exams which offer a better student experience. An additional bonus was to find out we needed fewer rooms to host the exams leading to an unexpected saving. Exams are now completed in less weeks during each period. Staff stress and man hours have reduced significantly from two weeks down to two days. So far, we have completed ten exam periods now using Exam Scheduler and everything has been smooth during these periods”.
